Summer of Hell - Days 15-16: Flagstaff, Drop off RV
Our trip came to an end with a short hike in Monument Valley, a movie in Flagstaff, and a reminder of why Pheonix is a burning 120F hell-hole that should be avoided at all costs. What a wild ride!
Gouldings RV Resort
We hiked around near Gouldings to see another cool arch. We didn't feed the kids and they were getting hungry.
Fed the kids as soon as we got back. Packed up the RVs and donated most of our extra food and gear to the Navajo nation via the Gouldings team.
Navajo nation visitors center
We stopped at the Navajo nation visitors center. Not much going on there except the view, wasn't worth the cost of admission I'm afraid.
Drive to Flagstaff
Long 5hr drive back to Pheonix, so we stopped in Flagstaff after about 3 hours for mexican food and a movie.
I like Flagstaff, seemed like a cool place. We saw the new Twisters movie, which I totally loved! IMDb is unfortunately wrong on the 6.5/10 rating, I felt it was more like a 7.3. Maybe being stuck in an RV with a bunch of pre-teens messed with my objectivity. It was great to soak up some AC and relax.
Drive to Pheonix
The drive from Flagstaff into Pheonix was awful. It's only supposed to be two hours, but you know, construction. We left a little later than we wanted and most of the drive was in the dark. I guess I've reached that phase in my life where driving an RV at night isn't fun. Plus Flagstaff is at 7,000', Pheonix is at 1,000', and there was a 40-degree temperature difference!
You're probably thinking "hyperbole", but it was 80F in Flagstaff at 8:30pm and 120F in Pheonix just before midnight.
Desert's Edge RV Park
We stayed at the Desert's Edge RV Park. Fine place for a short stopover, but it was funny when I called to make a reservation, told the guy our dates, and he asked "Are you sure you want to stay here? It's going to be hot". It was 95F the next morning before the sun came up!
We dropped off the RV, got to the airport, and were back in cool SF in no time. WHAT A TRIP! We had so much fun.
